Profit Center Reports

Updated August 4, 2026 4 min read

Profit Center Reports shows profitability broken down by profit center for a single business entity at a time. For each profit center you see the income it earned, grouped by type; a consolidated Revenue figure; the cost rolled up from the cost centers beneath it; the resulting profit; and the profit margin. A company total row closes off the entity.

Every figure comes from posted accounting transactions, grouped by the General Ledger sub-category they were posted to. The report is read-only — nothing is created, edited, or deleted here.

What you can use it for

  • Comparing the contribution of each profit center within an entity
  • Identifying which product lines, regions, or divisions are carrying the business and which are not
  • Tracing any income figure back to the individual transactions behind it
  • Reviewing margin performance alongside absolute profit

Getting started

Opening the report

Go to Financial Management › Profit Center Reports in the sidebar. The page title and breadcrumb confirm where you are.

Access is permission-controlled. If you cannot see the report, or you get an access-denied message, your administrator can grant you access.

Selecting a business entity

The left-hand side panel lists every business entity that has at least one profit center defined against it, showing the entity name and code.

Only one entity is displayed at a time. Clicking an entity in the panel shows its profit center table and hides the others. A default entity is selected when you first open the report.

Above each table you’ll see the entity name along with its industry and currency. The currency shown determines the currency symbol used for every amount in that table, so figures are always presented in the entity’s own functional currency rather than converted.

Reading the table

Profit center rows

Each row is one profit center created under the selected entity, showing its name, its unique code, and a badge indicating its type — Production, Sales, Distribution, Region, Consulting, Investment, Property, Treasury, and so on, as classified in the Profit Center master.

Income columns

The income columns are built from your actual transactions rather than from a fixed template. One column appears for each income sub-category that has at least one posted transaction tagged to a profit center within the selected entity.

This means the columns differ from entity to entity. Sub-categories you may see include Sales, Profit on Sale of Asset, Other Operating Income, Rent Income, Discount Received, Interest Gain, Dividend Earned, and Other Non-Operating Income. An entity with no sales activity simply has no Sales column.

Each cell shows the total of posted transactions for that profit center within that sub-category. Where a profit center has nothing posted against a sub-category, the cell shows a dash rather than a zero.

Revenue

Revenue = the sum of all income columns for that profit center

This is a consolidated subtotal, shown after a column separator. It isn’t clickable — drill down from the individual income columns instead.

Less: Cost

The cost rolled up from the cost centers assigned beneath that profit center, following the cost center to profit center linkage set up in the Cost Center master. It is displayed as a negative value.

Where no cost centers roll up to a profit center, this shows a dash with a tooltip explaining that none have been assigned yet. Worth knowing, because a profit center with no linked cost centers will show its full Revenue as Result and a 100% margin — the cost simply isn’t there to deduct.

Result

Result = Revenue − Cost

Positive results are shown in green, negative in red, so you can scan the column for underperformers.

Margin

Margin = Result ÷ Revenue, expressed as a percentage

Company total

The closing row of the table totals every column across all profit centers in the entity — each income sub-category, Revenue, Cost, and Result. Margin is recalculated at entity level rather than averaged across the rows, so it reflects the entity’s overall margin.

Drilling into transactions

Opening the detail

Click any populated income amount to open the Transaction Detail page for that profit center and sub-category. Dashes are not clickable, and neither are the Revenue, Cost, Result, Margin, or company total figures.

What the detail page shows

The header identifies exactly what you’re looking at: a badge for the income sub-category, the profit center code and name, and the business entity.

Two summary cards give you Total Amount and Transaction Count.

Below them, a table lists each contributing posted transaction:

  • Date
  • Transaction Number — links through to the source entry in Manual Journals
  • GL Key — drawn from the General Ledger master
  • GL Account
  • Amount

A Total row closes the table, reconciling to the figure you clicked.
